Shengde Temple Pagoda: A Historical Landmark in Sichuan

Shengde Temple Pagoda is located in Jiancheng Town, initially known as ‘Shengyin Pagoda’. Later, it was renamed ‘White Pagoda’ due to the application of white chalk on the tower, and consequently, the temple came to be known as ‘White Pagoda Temple’.
The Shengde Temple Pagoda is a square, thirteen-story, multi-eave, pavilion-style brick pagoda, standing approximately 37 meters tall. The third level of the pagoda features an outer wall with brick-built eaves decoration, while the seventh level has a brick-built stupa decoration on the outer wall, which is quite peculiar.

The pagoda’s interior and exterior cylindrical columns, lintels, brackets, upturned ends, overlapping courses, and various ceilings and niches all exhibit the characteristics of the Song Dynasty style. The murals inside the pagoda display a skilled technique, vibrant colors, and a strong sense of three-dimensionality, reminiscent of the Tang Dynasty legacy.
