Xilai Ancient Town Introduction

Xilai Ancient Town is located in Pujiang County, Chengdu City, Sichuan Province. It not only preserves a large number of Western Sichuan folk houses from the Ming and Qing dynasties intact, but also has 12 well-known thousand-year-old banyan trees. It is a small town located on a flat dam among the mountains. It is a historical and cultural ancient town in Chengdu and one of the top ten charming towns in Chengdu.
Xilai has a long history, dating back more than 1,700 years. It used to be the seat of Linxi County. The core scenic area of the ancient town is the Old Street. This is an old street with nearly a hundred years of history. Boji Street, Yanxiang Alley, Shuixiang Alley, Hualongmenzi, and Tingzi Alley crisscross, forming a 1,200-meter-long street and nearly 700-meter-long alleys. Many Ming and Qing architectures are preserved here. The folk houses are of typical Western Sichuan characteristics, simple and elegant.

In the central courtyard of the Old Street stands the Wenfeng Pagoda built in the Qing Dynasty. The Wenfeng Pagoda is about 20 meters high, divided into 3 floors, plus a treasure top. It was completed at the end of the 13th year of Daoguang in the Qing Dynasty (1833). The tower body is hexagonal, and each floor has flying eaves and corners. The tower is surrounded by classical opera sculptures, accompanied by poems written in nine-curved seal script, which is rare in the world.

On the Old Street, there are also two wooden structure grand opera stages, which are said to have been built by the Qian and Liu families. Often, the two stages perform opposite each other, each singing its own tune and playing its own horn. There is a tall lamp post in the middle of the street. Dozens of various red lanterns illuminated by oil lamps are hanging on the lamp post. The opera stages are still in use today.

The antique Old Street, the gurgling brook, the green banyan trees, the gray folk houses, the small bridges, the flowing water, and the households emit a faint historical charm and strong folk customs in the natural freshness. This is Xilai.
