Wangcong Temple Introduction

Wangcong Temple is a cemetery and memorial temple where the tombs of two famous monarchs of the ancient Shu Kingdom, Emperor Wang and Emperor Cong, are located.

Among the palaces and tombs, pavilions such as “Tingjuan Tower” are built along the water according to the terrain. There are more than 200 ancient cypress trees in the cemetery and its surroundings, looking lush and green. Near Wangcong Temple, there are also tourist attractions such as Ziyun Pavilion and the Tomb of Yang Xiong.

The architectural style of Wangcong Temple is different from that of ordinary temples. The original temple was built according to the layout of the Yu Mausoleum on Kuaiji Mountain in Shaoxing, Zhejiang. The temple gate is not a single opening in one direction. There is no main gate. Instead, it is symmetrically opened as the east and west gates. Between the two gates, there is a screen wall directly.

In the due north of the screen wall, there are three gilded stone-carved characters: “Wangcong Temple”. Now, as soon as you enter the newly built main gate, you can see these three characters.

The garden in the temple is built entirely in line with the ideas of Emperor Wang teaching the people to engage in agriculture and Emperor Cong leading the people to harness the water. The pavilions and halls are carefully arranged, with a delicate and unique layout.

Especially, the water in the pond is the living water from the Minjiang River, which adds more charm.

In the temple of the imperial tombs, the tombs of Emperor Wang and Emperor Cong stand facing each other. It can be said to be one of the older imperial tombs in Sichuan.

Opening hours: It is open from 08:00 to 18:00 from May 1st to October 31st; and from 08:00 to 17:30 from November 1st to April 30th.

Must-see tips: Every Dragon Boat Festival, local people gather here to hold a “Song Contest”. The scale is grand and the number of people is large. The contestants are all ordinary civilians, with a strong rural flavor, and the scene is very lively.
