Wanfo Chan Temple is an ancient temple historically preserved in Suizhong County, located at the ‘Bohai Sea Coast’ in Wanjia, a town outside the pass of Guan, Suizhong County, Huludao City, Liaoning Province, adjacent to Shanhaiguan, Hebei Province. According to the inscriptions, the construction of Wanfo Chan Temple began during the Liao Dynasty, with three main halls and over forty auxiliary rooms built.
In the Ming Dynasty, the temple was expanded to include the Dragon King Hall, the Empress Palace, the Bell and Drum Towers, and two protective halls, with the temple’s incense burning increasingly and Buddhism flourishing here. During the Qing Dynasty, the temple was doubled in size, with the addition of the Sutra Pavilion, the Wanfo Pavilion, the Ancestor Hall, the Ksitigarbha Hall, and over a hundred monks’ rooms. At times, the resident monks numbered up to 120, with a continuous stream of lecturers preaching and countless people being saved, making Buddhism thrive here. At one time, the temple was renowned both inside and outside the pass, with tens of thousands of believers. Currently, the temple complex includes the Mahavira Hall, the Guanyin Hall, the Ksitigarbha Hall, the Medicine Buddha Hall, the Jialan Hall, and the Dragon King Hall, as well as the Buddha Recitation Hall, the Five Contemplations Hall, the monks’ quarters, and the lay followers’ forest, with a construction area of over 3,000 square meters, becoming a well-known place for benefiting sentient beings and spreading the Dharma in Western Liaoning and Eastern Hebei.
