The Three-Body Problem: A Sci-Fi Masterpiece by Liu Cixin

The Three-Body Problem is a long science fiction novel series written by Liu Cixin, consisting of The Three-Body Problem, The Dark Forest, and Death’s End. The first installment began serialization in Science Fiction World magazine in May 2006, the second was published in May 2008, and the third in November 2010. The series narrates the exchange of information and a life-and-death struggle between human civilization on Earth and the Trisolaris civilization, as well as the rise and fall of both civilizations in the universe.

The narrative of The Three-Body Problem makes significant breakthroughs in post-human thinking, establishing a model of interaction between science and literature, introducing moral connotations into the dialectical consideration of technology, and boldly hypothesizing and reconstructing technology within the cultural context through literary means. However, the core of technology serves as a narrative springboard, an important medium for transcending reality, and a significant tool for writing the community of shared human destiny.

The appeal of The Three-Body Problem lies in its deconstruction of anthropocentrism, leading to ethical reflection and literary expression on the relationship between humans and nature, animals, and ultimately pointing to the core idea of de-anthropocentrism. The first part, translated by Ken Liu, won the 73rd Hugo Award for Best Novel, and the English version of the third part won the 2017 Locus Award for Best Science Fiction Novel.

In 2019, The Three-Body Problem was included in the ’70 Novels of New China over 70 Years’ collection. In September 2022, The Three-Body Problem was selected as one of the ‘Top 10 National IPs of the Year 2021’.
