The Great Blue Mansion in Shenyang, Liaoning

The Great Blue Mansion is an iconic building of the Marshal Zhang’s Mansion. It was built from 1918 to 1922 and is a Romanesque-style building. Since the building is made of blue bricks, it is called the Great Blue Mansion.
The Great Blue Mansion is 37 meters high and was one of the highest points in Fengtian City at that time. The overall building is magnificent. The external three-dimensional reliefs are vivid in shape and exquisite in craftsmanship. The mural decoration techniques in the main internal rooms are unique and have high artistic value.

The Great Blue Mansion integrates office and living functions. As an important office place during the period when Zhang Zuolin and Zhang Xueliang, father and son, were in power in Northeast China, it has witnessed major historical events such as the two Zhili-Fengtian Wars, the Northeast Flag Replacement, the execution of Yang Yuting and Chang Yinhuai, and the armed mediation of the Central Plains War.

The Tiger Hall here is worth mentioning. A pair of majestic tigers (specimens) stand side by side. The “tigers” were originally given to “King of Northeast China” Zhang Zuolin by his subordinate Tang Yulin. It was the place where Yang Yuting and Chang Yinhuai were executed at that time and got its name because of the tigers in the hall. One of the tiger specimens at that time is now preserved on the campus of Shenyang Tongze Middle School, and the other has disappeared due to poor preservation.

It contains rich historical connotations and is a witness and microcosm of the modern and contemporary history of Northeast China.
