The ancient city wall in Xingcheng was initially built in the third year of Xuande in the Ming Dynasty (1428 AD). It is one of the few ancient city wall architectures from the Ming and Qing dynasties in China. It is a specimen of a military defense city in the Ming Dynasty. Similar to the city walls in Pingyao, Xi’an, and Jingzhou, it is one of the four relatively complete ancient city walls remaining in China.
The city wall is square in shape, with a perimeter of 3,274 meters. There are city gates in the center of each of the four sides of the wall. Above each city gate, there is an arrow tower, which is a two-story pavilion.
