This theater troupe is a privately-run folk opera troupe, relying on market competition and box office revenue to sustain themselves. The predecessor of the troupe was the original Sichuan Opera Troupe of Chengdu Workers’ Cultural Palace in 1989, which was located at Tidi Street and Zhongshan Park. Mr. Hu Lianhua has been leading performances since 1989 until the relocation of the old cultural palace.
Due to fierce market competition, the troupe relocated here to adapt to the changing circumstances, underwent transformation and upgrading, and settled down. To date, Lianhua Liyuan Society is one of the three historic folk opera troupes in the central area of Chengdu City. Apart from two state theaters at the provincial and city levels, only these three troupes are performing traditional Sichuan operas. They are also a directorate unit awarded by the Sichuan Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism. For the locals, it is a place where they can watch plays day in and day out, with a performance every day of the year without interruption. Lianhua Liyuan Society’s leader, Hu Lianhua (a famous Sichuan opera male dan), stands out as a unique and beautiful flower in the essence of the nation. The male dan’s unique metallic voice and breath control form a distinct style, with excellent leg and waist strength and full performance. To date, he is the only male dan leader in the Sichuan opera who makes a living by performing. To meet the diverse aesthetic demands of the audience, the saying goes, ‘A mountain is not high unless there is a fairy, and water is not deep unless there is a dragon.’ Come and welcome distinguished guests to this place of leisure and entertainment, where you can enjoy the wonderful performances by Hu Lianhua and his team. Traditional Sichuan Opera classics are performed (except on holidays), every Sunday afternoon from 2:00 to 4:00 PM.
