Shangqing Palace: A High Altitude Taoist Temple in Qingcheng Mountain

Shangqing Palace is a Taoist temple situated at a high altitude within Qingcheng Mountain, featuring halls such as the Hall of Laojun, Hall of Sanqing, Hall of Wenwu, and the Hall of Dao De Jing. With a thriving incense, most visitors come here to burn incense and pray for blessings.
At the entrance of the temple, there is a viewing pavilion ideal for sunrise observation. Shangqing Palace is located on the first peak of Qingcheng Mountain, approximately 500 meters from the summit, on a hillside. It was originally constructed during the Jin Dynasty, with the existing halls built during the Tongzhi era of the Qing Dynasty (1862-1874). On the western stone wall outside the mountain gate, there are inscriptions by Huang Tianhu, reading ‘The Fifth Famous Mountain in the World’ and ‘The First Peak of Qingcheng’.

The Hall of Laojun enshrines the statues of the Supreme Old Lord, the Pure Yang Ancestor, and the Sanfeng Ancestor; the Hall of Sanqing houses the statues of the Three Pure Ones and their twelve golden immortal disciples; the Hall of Dao De Jing has a nanmu wood wall panel engraved with the ‘Dao De Jing’; the Hall of Wenwu worships the cultural sage Confucius and the martial sage Guan Yu.

Within the temple, there are legendary sites such as Magu Pool and Yuanyang Well. Not far away, there is Paomaoping and Qigan Stone, said to be the training site of Zhang Xianzhong’s rebel army at the end of the Ming Dynasty. Climbing the stone steps behind Shangqing Palace leads to the summit of Qingcheng Peak, where Yinghuo Pavilion is built, offering a prime location for viewing the sunrise, sea of clouds, and divine lights of Qingcheng Mountain, also known as the Sunrise Viewing Pavilion.
