Qintai Road: A Tribute to the Legendary Love Story of Zhuo Wenjun and Sima Xiangru

Qintai Road is named in honor of the legendary figures from the Western Han Dynasty, Zhuo Wenjun and Sima Xiangru, who are symbols of love. The couple once operated a tavern on the ancient Qintai Road, with Zhuo Wenjun personally serving wine. Elegantly dressed in light makeup, Zhuo Wenjun sold wine from a platform where wine jars were placed, maintaining a dignified and composed demeanor. In order to preserve their love, Sima Xiangru did not play the zither. Instead, he dressed like a waiter at the tavern, wearing short trousers, carrying pots, and doing miscellaneous chores, engaging in light-hearted conversation. Despite their modest lifestyle, the couple was blissfully happy, unencumbered by worldly concerns!
Today, Qintai Road is known as the ‘Jewelry Street’ of Chengdu City, where major jewelry stores are concentrated, and it also houses several catering establishments suitable for wedding banquets, hence its nickname ‘Love Road’ among locals. Spanning 900 meters, the road is supported by Han and Tang Dynasty-style architecture and showcases the customs, music, and banquets of the Han Dynasty, with the love story of Sima Xiangru and Zhuo Wenjun as its main theme.

Shufeng Yayun – located almost in the middle of Qintai Road, this popular Sichuan Opera House, also a teahouse, has gained significant popularity in recent years. It offers large bowls of tea, as well as performances such as face-changing and fire-spitting, making it a hot spot for tourists. Shufeng Yayun, once a gathering place for renowned Sichuan Opera actors, has recently regrouped these stars to present a ‘classic opera, folk art performance’ every evening. It has not only gained fame but also been widely reported by media both domestically and internationally. The venue is open all year round, with full-day access.
