Longtan Temple in Chengdu, Sichuan: History, Culture and Attractions

Longtan Town was originally called Longxing Township and is commonly known as Longtan Temple. Longtan Temple has a long history.
Legend has it that during the Three Kingdoms period, Liu Chan, the son of Liu Bei, the emperor of the Shu Han, passed by this place. Due to the hot weather, he bathed in a pool. After Liu Chan ascended the throne, people named this pool ‘Longtan’ (Dragon Pool). It got the name ‘Longtan Temple’ because there is a temple on the right side of the Longtan.

Longtan Temple is the head of the ‘Five Markets in the Eastern Mountains’ and also a traditional settlement area for the Hakka people in the Eastern Mountains. More than 90% of the people here are Hakka and speak Hakka dialect, which is different from the Sichuan dialect.

Longtan Temple is adjacent to the outer side of the Third Ring Road, with convenient transportation. It is a necessary route to surrounding areas such as Xindu and Jintang, so it has developed rapidly. There are not only the ancient Hakka town of ‘Luodai’ and the ‘Great Wall’, North Lake Ecological Park, Panda Sports Park, etc. in the surrounding area, but also the Panda Breeding Base, the bus terminal, the Multi-headquarters Economic Development Industrial Park and Longgang Steel City, and so on.

At the same time, Longtan Temple carries the development, promotion and publicity of Hakka culture and is an indispensable part for the outside world to understand the Hakka culture in the Eastern Mountains.
