Kaiyuan Old City is an ancient city with a long history and full of vicissitudes. Today, the faintly distinguishable broken walls, the towering ancient pagodas, the simple and unsophisticated bell and drum towers, and the narrow and secluded alleys all reveal the charm of this ancient city.
Since the Qin and Han dynasties, higher-level administrative institutions have been set up in Kaiyuan Old City in each dynasty. In the late Ming Dynasty, the Manchu gradually became stronger. In order to enhance the defensive ability, a new brick city was built on the east side of the old earthen city, which is today’s Kaiyuan Old City.
Kaiyuan Old City is square in shape. The city wall is three zhang and five chi high, and the perimeter is thirteen li and twenty steps. It was the second largest city in the entire Northeast region at that time, only slightly smaller than Liaoyang. There are four city gates in the whole city, and there are four corner towers on the city wall. The whole city is magnificent in architecture.
However, it has been repeatedly damaged by wars later, resulting in the city being dilapidated and finally demolished during the Cultural Revolution. In recent years, the restoration project of Kaiyuan Old City has been fully launched, and the main buildings in the old city have been gradually restored.
