Hemingshan • Daoyuan Holy City Cultural Scenic Area is located in Sanfeng Village, Heming Township, 12 kilometers northwest of Dayi County, western Chengdu, Sichuan. It is the birthplace of Taoism in China and a pilgrimage destination for Taoism in the world. It is honored as the “Fairy Capital of the Tao Country” and the “Ancestral Court of China”.
The scenic area is built according to the standards of a national 4A-level scenic area. Following the core idea of Taoism of “harmony between man and nature” and advocating harmonious coexistence with nature, based on the unique feng shui landform of Hemingshan, it skillfully places the Taiji, Nine Palaces, Eight Trigrams, Big Dipper, Eight Arrays, Hetu Luoshu, Azure Dragon, White Tiger, etc. of Taoism in their respective positions, forming a mysterious architectural complex, feng shui formation map and ancient tree forest landscape. It continues the rare Han Dynasty architectural style in Taoist architecture. The folding eaves are flexibly combined and full of changes. The interior decoration of the palaces and temples is delicate and elegant, integrating the ancient and the modern.
It is adjacent to Qingcheng Mountain in the north (about 30 kilometers), Emei Mountain in the south (about 120 kilometers), Wuzhong Mountain in the west (about 10 kilometers), and reaches the Western Sichuan Plain in the south. It is about 70 kilometers away from Chengdu.
Historically, Hemingshan used to have row upon row of palaces and temples. Thousands of people came to worship and the incense was booming. In the late Yuan Dynasty, Master Zhang Sanfeng once came here to practice and attain enlightenment for many years. The ancient cypress planted by Zhang Sanfeng is still lush today. In the Ming Dynasty, Emperor Jiajing personally designated Hemingshan as one of the five Taoist altars for the national grand ceremony of praying for heaven’s blessing and longevity.
Later, due to the passage of time and the changes of the world, most of the palaces and temples on Hemingshan were destroyed in wars. There are not many existing historical sites left.
