Gongbu Shrine in Chengdu Du Fu Thatched Cottage Museum

The Gongbu Shrine is located within the Du Fu Thatched Cottage Museum in Chengdu. It is the last and also an important one among the five main buildings. When Du Fu was in Chengdu, he was recommended by Yan Wu as the Assistant Administrator of the Ministry of Works. Therefore, later generations respectfully addressed him as Du Gongbu and named the shrine commemorating him the Gongbu Shrine.
In front of the Gongbu Shrine, there is a couplet written by He Shaoji of the Qing Dynasty: “You have taken up the beautiful scenery of Jinjiang River and spring breeze; I come back on the seventh day of the first lunar month to the thatched cottage.”

Inside the Gongbu Shrine, in the middle is a shrine dedicated to Du Fu. On the east and west sides are the statues of Lu You, a poet of the Southern Song Dynasty, and Huang Tingjian, a poet of the Northern Song Dynasty respectively. There are also two stone carvings of Du Fu in the hall. The one in the middle was created by He Yudu of the Ming Dynasty and was engraved in the 30th year of the Wanli reign (1602 AD).

The stone carving depicts Du Fu as having a plump figure and an elegant demeanor. The other one is a stone carving of “Portrait of Du Shiyi, the Sage of Poetry”, copied by Zhang Jun of the Qing Dynasty from the version of Nanxun Hall. The stone carving shows Du Fu with a thin face and deep-set eyes, vividly presenting the poet’s destitute life and his deep concern for the country and the people.

In addition, there are two stone carvings of the panoramic view of the thatched cottage in the hall. They were engraved in the 50th year of the Qianlong reign (1793 AD) and the 16th year of the Jiaqing reign (1811 AD) of the Qing Dynasty respectively. The stone carvings clearly outline the appearance of the thatched cottage at that time.
