General’s Stele: A Cultural Landmark in Chengdu

General’s Stele is a cultural landmark in Chengdu and also a collective name for a jurisdictional area. Its origin dates back to the deeds of a general during the Qing Dynasty. In the 41st year of the Qianlong Emperor’s reign, General Agui led his troops to quell the rebellions in the regions of Da and Xiao Jinchuan, returning victorious. The troops donated funds to build a memorial hall in his honor, known as Desheng An.

In the 17th year of the Jiaqing Emperor’s reign, the hall was renovated and a stone stele describing Agui’s life and achievements was placed inside, which came to be known as the General’s Stele. After the hall was destroyed, the stele remained, standing by the roadside, and thus the General’s Stele became the name of the area. It is open all year round and accessible 24 hours a day.
