Gao’s Residence, situated in the southeast corner of Xingcheng Ancient City, was originally constructed in 1926 and covers an area of 5000 square meters. The residence consists of 18 rooms, divided into residential and garden sections, showcasing a typical architectural style of upper-class officials’ residences in Northeast China during the modern era. Due to historical reasons, it is also known by various names such as Gao’s Residence, Gao’s Garden, and Gao’s Courtyard.
It is one of the well-preserved buildings within the ancient city, featuring a unique architectural style that combines both Chinese and Western elements in a traditional courtyard layout. The owner, General Gao Rulian, once served as a lieutenant general and chief of staff to Zhang Xueliang. After retiring from military service in 1928, General Gao lived in this residence until 1947. Following the liberation of Xingcheng, the mansion served as a county committee office and a school. In 2003, it was opened to the public as a tourist attraction. Presently, the side rooms of the main courtyard are arranged with exhibitions such as ‘Exhibition of General Gao Rulian’s Life and Achievements’ and ‘Exhibition of Modern Military Leaders of Xingcheng’. The garden, named ‘Yao Garden’, is serene and elegant. The opening hours and business status are subject to the actual conditions on the day.
