Feisha Weir – An Important Part of Dujiangyan Irrigation Project

Feisha Weir is a long embankment below Yuzui. Although it looks ordinary, it plays a huge role. It functions as a flood discharge and sediment drainage facility and is the key to ensuring that the Chengdu Plain is free from floods in the Dujiangyan Irrigation Project.
The mountain where Erwang Temple is located is a great place to overlook Feisha Weir.

During spring, autumn, and winter, Feisha Weir is a smooth path for people traveling between Lidui Park and the suspension bridge. During the flood season, the waves splash here, and it serves as the flood discharge channel of the Neijiang River.

Its main function is that when the water volume of the Neijiang River exceeds the upper limit of the Baopingkou flow rate, the excess water will overflow from Feisha Weir by itself. In case of extremely severe floods, it will also break the embankment by itself, allowing a large amount of river water to return to the main stream of the Minjiang River.

Another function is “flying sand”. The Minjiang River carries a large amount of sediment and stones. If they are allowed to flow downstream along the Neijiang River, they will silt up Baopingkou and the irrigation area. Feisha Weir actually throws the sediment, pebbles, and huge boulders weighing thousands of catties brought from the upstream into the Waijiang River (mainly by skillfully using the centrifugal force), ensuring the smooth flow of the Neijiang River.
