The Ecological Monkey Area is located near the “One-Line Sky”, below Hongchunping and above Qingyin Pavilion. It is the largest wild monkey area in China. Under the leadership of the monkey king, the monkeys here are very domineering. They are not afraid of people at all. They take the initiative to play with people and even hold sticks and ask for food in the middle of the road. They are a living landscape of Emei Mountain.
The scientific name of the Emei Mountain monkeys is Macaca thibetana, which is a national second-class protected animal. They are also known as Sichuan stump-tailed monkeys, great blue monkeys, and stump-tailed monkeys. Due to living on the famous Buddhist mountain for a long time, they have the interesting name “Monkey Layman”. They feed on the leaves, flowers, and fruits of plants. There are currently three family-style wild groups in the monkey area, with a total of about 400 monkeys.
