Chengdu’s Historic Lovebird Building: A Journey Back in Time

Located at No. 18, Hongwasi Street in Chengdu, the Lovebird Building was constructed in the 1970s and 1980s. Upon passing through the courtyard gate, one feels as if they have stepped back in time from the bustling modern city to the last century. Leisurely elderly, red low-rise brick houses, and towering plane trees surround the area. Walking under the shade of the trees, the corner of the courtyard features a 6-story old residential building that immerses visitors in the life of that era.

This residential building consists of two adjacent residences, connected by two intersecting, zigzag staircases, hence the name ‘Lovebird Building’. Originally, it served as the old dormitory for Sichuan University’s faculty, built in the 1960s and 1970s. Today, this place has become a small haven for rental housing, with low rental prices attracting many young people and migrant workers. The opening hours and business status are subject to the daily operational conditions.
