Beitou Mountain: A Sacred Buddhist Site in Jinzhou

Beitou Mountain, located about 7 kilometers northwest of Jinzhou city, is a renowned northern temple with a history of over 1400 years. It is revered as the manifestation site of the Bodhisattva Guanyin in the north and boasts one of the largest Buddhist architectural complexes in Northeast China. Visitors can immerse in the rich Buddhist atmosphere, explore various historical sites, and admire stone inscriptions.

With its lush forests and beautiful scenery, Beitou Mountain is an ideal destination for hiking in the summer and experiencing the thrill of a zipline. The scenic area includes temple buildings such as the Lower and Upper Courts of Beitou Zen Temple and Guanyin Cave. After entering the mountain gate, there is an asphalt road that can be driven up the mountain by car. Walking about 1 kilometer from the gate leads to the Lower Court of Beitou Zen Temple, where visitors can also see attractions like the Ox Drinking Spring and the Longevity Character Stone.

From here, one can take a cable car to Jiguan Mountain (round trip for 30 yuan, one way for 20 yuan) or climb the mountain via stone steps (taking about half an hour). The main peak, Jiguan Mountain, stands at over 300 meters above sea level, with a statue of Laozi at the summit. On a clear day, one can overlook the entire scenic area and even glimpse the city of Jinzhou. Continuing from the cable car station, following the scenic spot signs leads to Guanyin Cave.

Along the way, one passes the incense trail once trodden by Emperor Qianlong, a tranquil stone path. There is also a zipline station en route, offering a thrilling ride to the waist of Jiguan Mountain (40 yuan) with only a rope tied around the body.
Guanyin Cave is a temple hall carved into the mountain cliff, housing the statue of the Bodhisattva Guanyin, known for its efficacy in granting wishes.

Nearby are the Moon Old Temple, the Linggu Pagoda of past eminent monks, and other historical sites. After visiting Guanyin Cave, heading towards the Upper Court of Beitou Zen Temple, one passes through the Lover’s Garden and the Yuanchen Hall, which houses 61 statues of celestial beings. Further inside lies the main architectural complex of Beitou Mountain, starting with the grand Hall of the Heavenly Kings and the adjacent Bell and Drum Towers.

Behind them stands the 25-meter-tall Drop Guanyin, the largest outdoor Buddha in Western Liaoning, with a solemn and sacred appearance. The final destination is the Mahavira Hall of the Upper Court of Beitou Zen Temple.
In addition, the temple has many side halls, including the Dharma Treasure Pavilion, which houses dozens of mementos gifted by eminent monks from famous mountains and ancient temples at home and abroad.

Beitou Mountain scenic area is not very large, allowing visitors to freely arrange the order of attractions. After the tour, one must return to the mountain gate via the same route. A battery car is available at Lover’s Garden near the scenic area center for a return trip to the gate (7 yuan per person). There are small shops and restaurants nearby for dining, or visitors can bring their own food and drinks.
