Baihe Mountain: A Renowned Buddhist Retreat and Scenic Spot in Western Sichuan

Baihe Mountain is located 3 kilometers west of the urban area of Qionglai City. Legend has it that Hu An, a scholar from the Han Dynasty, once sequestered himself in the mountain to interpret the ‘I Ching’, and he attained enlightenment here, ascending on a white crane, hence the name. The main peak of Baihe Mountain stands at an elevation of 760 meters, and the scenic area covers approximately 5 square kilometers.

It is a well-known Buddhist forest and tourist destination in Western Sichuan. The architecture of Baihe Mountain follows the single-eave hip-and-gable style, with the temple currently occupying over thirty acres, including over 5,000 square meters of temple halls and auxiliary buildings. There are more than twenty nuns residing here, making it a key religious activity site in the province. The inscription ‘He Lin Temple’ on the temple gate is a calligraphy work by Zhao Puchu, the chairman of the National Buddhist Association.

The Siming Tower, originally located on the left side inside the first mountain gate, was destroyed and reconstructed in 1989 with funds raised, now situated on the left side behind the Mahavira Hall. Climbing the tower and gazing into the distance from the railing offers a relaxing and refreshing view, with the ancient city of Qionglai and the meandering, beautiful landscape of the southwest unfolding before your eyes.

The mountain is open to visitors from 7:30 to 18:30 all year round.
