Qianfo Mountain is surrounded by mountains. It features natural landscapes such as peaks, cliffs, ancient maples and strange rocks. The Buddha statues, caves and waters here are well-known. It is a tourist scenic area integrating religious sacrifices, cliff carving art and natural scenery.
Legend has it that during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, a monk named Zhu Wen from Wutai Mountain came here after long-term almsgiving. Seeing the mountain rising abruptly with numerous rocks standing upright, he vowed to carve a thousand Buddha statues on the cliff. However, the project was interrupted due to war, but the mountain got its name Qianfo Mountain because of this. Currently, 158 well-preserved cliff statues are precious treasures of Buddhist stone carving art.
The living Buddha of Agu Temple practices here. During sacrificial activities, there is an endless stream of believers coming to worship Buddha and pray for the living Buddha to touch their heads.
