Guansui Palace in Shenyang, Liaoning

Guansui Palace, also known as the East Palace, was the living quarters of Hai Lanzhu, the imperial concubine whom Huang Taiji doted on throughout his life. Hai Lanzhu was the daughter of Zaisang, a beile of the Horqin tribe in Mongolia, and also the niece of Empress Zhezhe in the central palace. When Hai Lanzhu married Huang Taiji, she was already 26 years old. In the first year of Chongde, when Huang Taiji conferred titles on his concubines, Hai Lanzhu, despite joining later, was named the chief consort of the East Palace, and the palace where she lived was named “Guansui Palace”.

The term “Guansui” is derived from the poem “Guan Guan Ju Jiu, zai he zhi zhou. Yao Tiao Shu Nv, jun zi hao qiu” in the first chapter of The Book of Songs. This is an eternal love masterpiece. Naming the palace where Hai Lanzhu lived with such a richly connoted name fully demonstrates Huang Taiji’s special affection for Hai Lanzhu.

Opening hours: It is open from 08:30 to 17:00, Tuesday to Sunday throughout the year; it is closed all day on Monday throughout the year.
