Bird Island in Shenyang, Liaoning Introduction

Bird Island is currently a natural ecological bird-watching center in Shenyang. Also known as Ganhezi Island, it is located within the Qipanshan Development Zone, east of Dongling Park and south of the World Horticultural Exposition Garden. It is an island in the Hunhe River water system, covering an area of 49.26 hectares.
Historically, Bird Island got its name ‘Dragon Beach Fishing’ because its shape resembles a giant dragon lying in the (Hunhe) river, and it became one of the ‘Eight Scenes of Huishan’.

In different seasons of the year and at different times of the day on Shenyang Bird Island, the forests, shrubs, wetlands, and ponds on the island will present different landscapes to people. In spring, everything comes back to life and flowers bloom in profusion. The birds on the island begin to breed. In summer, the grass and trees are lush and green. In autumn, the forests are dyed in various colors. The newly grown wild geese follow their mothers, staggering on the ground covered with golden leaves. In winter, the island is covered in white snow and the land is desolate, but only the wild ducks are still playing on the unfrozen surface of the Hunhe River.

The wetland area is about 100,000 square meters. It is the main habitat for wild animals, especially waterfowl, wading birds, shorebirds, and passerine birds. Creating wetland landscapes can not only enrich the habitat types of Bird Island, allowing more birds to settle here, but also enrich the viewing content of the island, making the name ‘Bird Island’ truly worthy.

Tall trees such as Chinese pine, larch, Betula liaotungensis, Betula mongolica, ash, and white birch have been planted, as well as shrubs like honeysuckle, Rosa xanthina, Cornus alba, Spiraea salicifolia, and Philadelphus incanus, and aquatic plants such as water chestnuts, turfgrass, lotuses, and calamus, jointly forming forest, open woodland grassland, and wetland ecological landscapes.
