Nanqiao: An Ancient-Style Covered Bridge in Chengdu

Nanqiao is an ancient-style covered bridge with a ceiling adorned with colorful paintings and antique-style eaves. All the wood carvings are meticulously gilded and painted. Adjacent to the bridge lies a bustling food street where one can savor a variety of local delicacies. The bridge is especially beautiful at night, offering a pleasant experience of enjoying the river breeze, savoring snacks, and admiring the night view.
Nanqiao is situated over the Min River, downstream of the Baopingkou section of Dujiangyan, originally named ‘Puji Bridge’. It has been damaged multiple times and was reconstructed in 1959, renamed ‘Nanqiao’, and underwent maintenance again in 1979. The bridgehead features a broad facade with three sections, a pavilion-style triple-eave bridge hall, and a cylindrical tile roof. The roof is decorated with clay sculptures of various ridges, corners, animals, and figures. At the bridgehead, one can find wood carvings, pendant claws, dragon heads, river-crossing flower boards, and hanging wood carvings.
