Sichuan Opera, with a history spanning over thirteen hundred years, was once a traditional form of entertainment that is now gradually being forgotten and fading away. As a significant part of Bashu culture, Sichuan Opera carries the emotional tapestry of generations of Sichuan people. It is the soul of Sichuan and the spirit of Bashu. The mission of inheriting and promoting Sichuan Opera culture falls on the shoulders of the essence of the lotus, a term used to describe the quintessence of Sichuan Opera.
After more than 300 days of script revision and rehearsal, the essence of Sichuan Opera has been skillfully combined with modern elements to present a magnificent and stunning performance to the world. The program includes:
Prologue: ‘Origins’ – The spring thunder roars above the musical pool, and the drums and gongs of Sichuan Opera are making a lively scene, performing ‘Drum and Gong Ruckus’.
Act One: ‘The Valiant General’ – A lively fighting scene that invigorates the audience with its thrilling and surging atmosphere, performing ‘The Three Heroes Battle Lu Bu’.
Act Two: ‘Sleeves of Youth’ – Time flies, and Sichuan Opera artists pass on the torch from generation to generation, beginning their life in makeup, performing ‘The Best of Humanity’, ‘Sleeves’, and ‘The Four Skills and Five Methods’.
Act Three: ‘Market of the Moon’ – The twelve monthly markets encompass everything, with various unique skills taking turns to perform, showcasing ‘Hidden Knife’, ‘Bicycle Stunt’, ‘Hand Shadow’, and ‘Leather Jin Rolling the Lantern’.
Act Four: ‘A Hundred Years of Plum Fragrance’ – A Sichuan sound rises, and the lingering echo fills the air, evoking a strong sense of homesickness among Sichuan people, performing ‘The Red Plum Pavilion’ and ‘Face Changing Show’.
Epilogue: ‘The Quintessence of the Lotus’ – A new image of Sichuan Opera re-emerges, with new characters taking the stage, performing the curtain call show ‘New Edition of Opera Costumes’.
