Jiulao Cave: A Mysterious Underground Palace in Emei Mountain

Jiulao Cave is a secluded and less-visited destination. Inside the cave, the atmosphere is chilly and dimly lit, often requiring visitors to light their own torches when the gatekeeper is absent. Bats flit about, adding to the eerie ambiance. This site is ideal for adventure seekers, but it is recommended to explore in groups.

Jiulao Cave was once an underground river. Millions of years ago, as Emei Mountain rose, the water receded, leaving behind the cave. The cave’s formation was further shaped by the erosion of mountain waters, creating this vast underground palace on Emei Mountain. The cave is divided into three sections: the first section allows for upright walking; the second section introduces branching paths that require crawling; the third section is a fissure-type cave where even squeezing through sideways can be challenging. There are many branching paths within the cave, so visitors should pay close attention to avoid getting lost and wasting time.

The cave is open all year round, with full-day access.
