Living Water Park is located beside the Fu River within Chengdu city. It is the world’s first comprehensive environmental education park in a city. Covering an area of over 24,000 square meters, the water, taken from the Fu River, flows through a water purification system including an anaerobic pond, flowing water sculptures, an anoxic pond, plant ponds, plant beds, and fish ponds in sequence. It demonstrates to people the life process of water in nature changing from “turbid” to “clear” and from “dead” to “alive”.
It is a globally well-known successful case of environmental governance. The large-scale water treatment project in the park has greatly improved the water quality of the Funan River, allowing citizens to witness the natural process of water changing from dirty to clean and feel proud of it. Every day, 200 cubic meters of water is pumped from the river, treated to remove heavy metals, and then returned to the river. The park is shaped like a “fish”, symbolizing vitality and health, which has become one of the highlights of the design. Tourists usually enter from the fish’s mouth and walk towards the fish’s tail. And walking along the riverbank happens to be a good way to take a stroll in the park and enjoy the panoramic view. After entering the park, first climb up the hillside and then reach the circular square, which includes a pool and a teahouse. Rare native plants originally from Emei Mountain, one of the four famous Buddhist mountains in China, are introduced and planted on the hillside, aiming to reproduce the sacred mountain. Natural scenery such as the central garden sculpture fountain, natural ecological riverbank, and “Colorful Pools of Huanglong” in the park is skillfully integrated with dozens of aquatic plants and ornamental fish.
