Gulong Temple: A Historical Gem in Chengdu

Gulong Temple is located in Huanglongxi Town, Huayang Town, Shuangliu County, Chengdu City, and is one of the earliest temples built in Huanglongxi Ancient Town. It is situated at the southern end of the main street of the ancient town, facing north. The temple is renowned for its harmonious combination of ancient architecture, an ancient stage, and ancient banyan trees, which together form a unique characteristic of the site.
Above the main entrance of Gulong Temple is the stage, known as the ‘Wannian Stage’, covering an area of 103 square meters and standing 8 meters high. It was built in the early Qing Dynasty and has a history of over three hundred years. It is the only remaining one among the nine stages in Huanglongxi.

On either side of the Wannian Stage, there are two ancient banyan trees (also known as Huangge trees or Huangjue trees), which are believed to be over 900 years old. Legend has it that these two trees were planted by Huanglong’s patriarch when he came here to help the people escape from suffering. It is said that in the past, the canopy of these two trees once covered the entire courtyard.

Directly opposite the Wannian Stage is the Maitreya Hall, in front of which stands a thousand Buddhas iron pagoda. In addition to the Maitreya Hall, the main buildings currently existing in Gulong Temple include the Mahavira Hall, the Guanyin Hall, and the Amitabha Hall. The opening hours and specific business status are subject to the daily opening conditions.
